Mobile users can now opt-out by text

As of today, Ofcom will allow mobile phone users the chance to opt-out of nuisance calls by adding their mobile number to the existing ‘do not call’ database – the telephone preference service, or TPS for short – by text message.

This comes following alarming research from Ofcom. They found that around 50% of people who know of or are registered with TPS didnt know they could register their mobile number.

We recently published a post on TPS sign up statistics, where around 88% of all UK landlines are now registered with the Telephone Preference Service. Compare that 3% of mobile numbers that are currently registered, it shows quite the gap in awareness.

The Information Commissioner’s Office has the ability to take action against those who are found to be making illegal, unsolicited marketing calls.
